Fossil Frenzy

Students will engage in a series of prehistoric clues, including observing fossils, constructing a geologic timeline, and analyzing maps to determine what Illinois looked like 300 million years ago.

Student Challenge:

Using evidence from fossils, geologic events, and maps, uncover what types of creatures lived in the tropical ocean that once covered Illinois millions of years ago. Fossils, maps, and geologic clues allow us to reconstruct that vanished world and the organisms that inhabited it. By closely observing the mysterious Tully Monster fossil and other organisms that lived alongside it, you will piece together a picture of Illinois 300 million years ago. This unusual creature still baffles scientists, and now it’s your turn to interpret the evidence and create your own version of the Tully Monster as a paleoartist.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Analyze fossil evidence, including the Tully Monster and companion specimens, to infer that Illinois was once a Paleozoic shallow sea.
  • Interpret data to recognize how the Earth’s landscapes have shifted over geologic time.
  • Create a model of an organism that lived in Illinois during the Paleozoic era.

NGSS Connections:

Disciplinary Core Idea (DCI): 3-LS4-1 Biological Evolution / 4-ESS1-1 Earth’s Place in the Universe

Science and Engineering Practice (SEP): Analyzing and Interpreting Data / Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions

Crosscutting Concept (CCC): Scale, Proportion, and Quantity / Patterns

Cross-Curricular Connections:

  • Social Emotional Learning — 3B.2a.Identify and apply the steps of systematic decision-making. 2c.3b. Demonstrate cooperation and teamwork to promote group effectiveness.

Materials:

DCM Educators will bring fossil replicas, timeline cards, and a 3D interactive map, as well as student field notebooks for recording evidence from the various clues. Students will also be provided with various art materials to create their own model of a Tully Monster.
