Shape Your Story

Students will use a voting process to determine a story setting and character for their class shape story. In a guided digital story facilitation, students will follow along in the creation of a visual story based on their chosen setting and character. They will use 2D shapes to interpret the story from their point of view while also creating 3D shapes that are used in the story. After the class story is completed, students will use the 3D shapes they created to make their own 3-dimensional shape story.

Student Challenge:

Through the creation of a class story, identify where 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes are found in a real world context. Use 2D shapes and compose 3D shapes to create elements in the class story. Combine 3D shapes to make an individualized shape story.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will identify 2D and 3D shapes and math concepts in real world situations.
  • Students will compose and combine 2D and 3D shapes to create a unique class story and an individualized shape story.
  • Students will practice counting, adding, subtracting, and using the Base 10 system.

Common Core Math Connections:

Geometry: K.G.B.4 – Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts and other attributes.

Geometry: 1.G.A.2 – Compose two-dimensional shapes or three-dimensional shapes to create a composite shape and compose new shapes from the composite shape.

Geometry: 2.G.A.1 – Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.

Operations & Algebraic Thinking K. OA.A.2 – Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g. by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.

Cross-Curricular Connections:

  • Common Core Math – MP.7: Look for and make use of structure
  • C3 Framework: D4.8.K-2. Use listening, consensus-building, and voting procedures to decide on and take action in their classrooms.
  • Visual Art Standards: Cr1.1.K: Engage in exploration with materials.

Materials:

DCM Educators will provide digital options (Google Slides or Powerpoint) for different shape stories including a setting backdrop, characters, and story elements that are composed of 2D shapes. Students will receive a kit to follow along with the class story, which will include 2D shape stickers and materials to create 3D shapes. Students will also receive a platform and have access to additional art materials to create their own 3D shape story.
