Play, Joy, & Connection at DCM

By Jessica Kincaid, BSN, BA, RNC-OB, CCE, Perinatal Support Services Coordinator, Women’s and Children’s Services at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital

As the perinatal support services coordinator for the NICU at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, I’ve witnessed firsthand the profound impact that play can have on a child’s development, even from the earliest stages of life. While our primary focus is on the health and well-being of our smallest patients, we know that fostering an environment that encourages playful interaction can significantly enhance their recovery and growth.

One remarkable resource in our community that exemplifies the importance of playful learning is the DuPage Children’s Museum. This special place creates an enriching environment where children can engage in hands-on activities that ignite their curiosity and creativity. The Museum’s focus on interactive exhibits allows children of all ages to learn through play, which is essential for cognitive and emotional development. For families with children who have experienced medical challenges, such as those in the NICU, the Museum offers a supportive community where kids can explore freely and find joy in learning. It’s a reminder that play is a powerful tool for healing, offering families a sense of normalcy and connection, particularly after a hospital stay.

When we decided to find a new venue for our annual NICU reunion, DuPage Children’s Museum was at the top of our list for several reasons. First and foremost, DCM’s focus on playful learning creates a warm and inviting atmosphere where families and providers can reconnect and celebrate their journeys together. The museum offers a variety of interactive exhibits that encourage exploration and engagement, making it a perfect space for children, including those who are now thriving after their NICU experiences, to play and interact freely.

Additionally, the Museum’s layout is designed with families in mind. With safe, accessible spaces for children of all ages, parents can relax and enjoy the event while their kids explore in a secure environment. This sense of safety and community is particularly important for families who have faced the challenges of a NICU stay, as it allows them to focus on joy and connection rather than worry.

Moreover, DuPage Children’s Museum has been a wonderful partner in bringing our reunion vision to life each year. Their staff is exceptionally welcoming and responsive to our needs, making the planning process seamless and enjoyable. It’s truly a pleasure to collaborate with such a supportive team!

Overall, the Museum provides a vibrant, supportive, and engaging environment that not only honors the journeys of NICU families but also inspires joy and connection. Our NICU families and hospital staff have really enjoyed our partnership with DCM and hope to continue it in the future!
