We are rooted in community. Learn how we got to where we are today.
1987 – Founded
DuPage Children’s Museum was founded in 1987 by two early childhood educators from Hinsdale, Louise Beem and Dorothy Carpenter
FUN FACT: 1987-1988 the Museum was a van that traveled to park disticts, scout troops, preschools, and other organizations.
1989 – Opened Temporary Location
DCM opened a temporary location in the Elmhurst Park District. Each morning, Museum workers had to take the exhibits out of a storage area and assemble them, and at the end of the day, reverse the process.
FUN FACT: DCM attracted 7,080 visistors this year.
1992 – Opened Full-Time Pilot Location
A full-time pilot location for the Museum was established in the Wheaton Park District Community Center. With this change in location, DCM was able to be open more hours, and move from seasonal to year-round operation.
FUN FACT: In 2002, DCM served over 300,000 visitors and was 11,000 members strong!
2004 – Hitting a Milestone
On December 21 the Museum celebrated the millionth visitor family since relocating to Naperville.
FUN FACT: DCM welcomes visitors from all 50 states and almost all parts of Illinois most years.
2007 – Celebrating Innovation
DCM celebrated its 20th anniversay as the place where learning comes into play. After the Museum unveiled a new layout in 2005, with several exhibit enhancements, DCM was named one of Chicagoland’s top 10 cultural attractions by Crain’s Chicago Business in 2006.
FUN FACT: DCM became the first children’s museum to offer its own education-oriented blog in 2005.
2015 – The Great Flood
From lemons to lemonade. A burst pipe resulted in extensive water damage to all three floors causing the museum to close in January, that was the lemons. The lemonade… reimagining an entire museum and coming back better than ever in September!
FUN FACT: DCM was generously given space in the Westfield Fox Valley Mall where DCM@The Mall, a museum on a smaller scale, was able to serve visitors while the Museum was being rebuilt.
While this chapter is still being written, DuPage Children’s Museum has three floors of interactive exhibits, unique events, memorable parties, innovative programs, fun Learning Labs, and even a S.M.A.R.T. Café. There is truly something for everyone! Visit us soon, to explore and discover how DCM continues to change and meet the needs of the communities we serve!
